Play CQ Politics “VP Madness” Game…

6 05 2008

CQ Politics has launched a game modeled on the NCAA Tournament in which you can choose Senator John McCain’s Vice Presidential nominee from a field of 32 potential picks.  Included with each potential Veep pick is a handy-dandy tip sheet.

A few highlights: Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison faces former Presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani. Texas Governor Rick Perry faces Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.  We’ll take the “over” on Palin in the over-under in the Perry-Palin match-up.  ;-)

The vote on first-round match-ups ends today.  In subsequent weeks we’ll get the Veep Sweet 16, Elite 8, Final Four, and the championship (on May 22nd).

It’s interesting to note who didn’t make the cut among the CQ editors/reporters who put together the Veep list: former HP CEO Carly Fiorina, Senator Elizabeth Dole, Senator Richard Burr, Congressman Duncan Hunter, retired General Tommy Franks, former Speaker Newt Gingrich, Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann, former Senator Rick Santorum, former Senator George Allen, former Governor Frank Keating, Governor Don Carcieri, SEC Chair Chris Cox, Congressman Paul Ryan, Congressman Mike Pence, Congressman John Kasich, Senator Lamar Alexander, Governor Bob Riley, and Governor Jon Huntsman.

Don’t feel too sorry for them.  We’re guessing that they got an invitation to CQ’s version of the NIT instead…

Big hat tip to KVUE’s Elise Hu!

Chron: Texas professors donate more to Dems than to GOP

6 05 2008

Wow!  And in other news, the sun rose in the eastThis ain’t news.

Hmmmm… let’s review the political leanings of own department’s full-time, tenured faculty for a minute.  Roll call!

  • Burke — Democrat
  • Faletta — Democrat
  • Taylor — Republican
  • Young — Democrat

Yep.  Typical of academia: 3-1 Democrat.

For fun, let’s toss in our adjuncts:

  • Carnahan — Republican
  • Calvillo — Democrat
  • Craddock — Republican
  • J. Heallen — Republican
  • K. Heallen — Republican
  • Linney — Republican
  • Mrouri — Democrat
  • Post — Democrat
  • Upchurch — Republican
  • Warren — Independent

A much different picture: 7-6-1 Republican.  Obviously, Taylor’s deliciously Machiavellian plan to create a Republican-dominated department is right on track.

Unlike the professors noted in the Chronicle’s story, none of us donate to political campaigns — we prefer to donate to Spec’s instead… ;-)
